Nepal: Everest pro-Tibet protesters may be shot

KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- Nepal has given its security personnel permission to shoot pro-Tibet demonstrators during China's Olympic flame climb to Mount Everest's summit early next month.

"About 25 soldiers and policemen have established camps on the mountain and they have been ordered to use force if necessary to stop any anti-Chinese activities," Mod Raj Dotel, spokesman for the home ministry, said Sunday. "This could mean shooting if necessary."

Security personnel will also check mountain climbers for non-essential expedition materials, Dotel added.

"If anyone is found with anti-Chinese material their permit will be canceled and returned from the mountain," he said.

Chinese climbers plan to take the Olympic flame to the top of the world's highest peak, at 8,848 meters (29,028 feet) as part of the global relay leading up to the August 8 opening of the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Spring is the most popular season for climbing Mount Everest, which straddles the border between Nepal and Tibet, an autonomous region of China.

The Nepali government has granted permits to dozens of climbers from 30 expeditions this season.

The Chinese have not allowed any expedition to climb the mountain from the north side, according the Kathmandu representative of the Tibet China Mountaineering Association.

Gallup Daily: Clinton 46%, Obama 45%

General election races remain tight

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking shows that Hillary Clinton now receives 46% of the support of Democrats nationally, compared to 45% for Barack Obama, marking the first time Obama has not led in Gallup's daily tracking since March 18-20.

One of those questions people always like to ask you is, "If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be?" One of the people on my own top five list would actually be Jimmy Carter...he's lived life, been a president, and knows the value and joy of that comes from making something with your hands, of having your fingers dirty and in the soil. This week he has taken a lot of grief for meeting with members of Hamas, and I have to ask why? He has no authority, is not representing the government of Israel or the United States, and what if he actually does the impossible, and makes some headway, is capable of getting Hamas to put something of value on the table?

How can we ever find peace if someone is not willing to sit down and speak with the enemy? What if Hamas actually has a few legitimate issues, such as the fact that much of the land that is now Israel was wrongfully taken from private land owners that just happen to be Palestinians? Should those wrongs not be addressed? What if what Hamas actually once to recognize Israel, end the undeclared war is reasonable? Does it make more sense to simply refuse to meet with a government (of a non-nation) that was put into power in FREE DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS? George Bush cannot have it both ways, cannot encourage people to hold free elections, then when the results are not what HE WANTED, refuse to recognize the voice of the people.

Carter needs to be given credit for what he is trying to do-opening dialog between two warring factions in the hopes of finding some common ground on which both sides could begin serious negotiations that might lead to a lasting peace and a permanent Palestine State.

China Eats Its Own-Jin Jing Now Chinese Netizen Traitor to China!

First, for the record I think that Jin Jing NEVER was a hero, that the whole episode was FAKED, a set up by the Chinese Thugs and Chinese Propaganda machine to drum up some nationalist pride as they watched their beloved coming out party bombing on the World Wide Stage. That being said, seems she is being demonized on the Chinese Web for suggesting it was not in China's best interest to boycott French Products. ( See boycott of French retailer Carrefour .) In a nation where human rights violations are the game of the day, where Chinese Troops shoot Tibetans, on a pilgrimage to see the Dalai Lama, in the back, Jin Jing's fall from grace is not surprising.

After excoriating a respected news editor for advocating greater freedom of speech and venting their anger on a Chinese student at Duke University for trying to promote dialogue between pro-China and pro-Tibet protestors, Chinese nationalists have turned their sights on a new, and frankly shocking, target: Jin Jing, the wheelchair-bound fencer declared a national hero last week after using her frail body to protect the Olympic flame from protesters in Paris. Jin’s crime? Expressing doubts over plans for a boycott of French retailer Carrefour–a boycott motivated in large part by the treatment she received in Paris.

Lanzhou-based blogger Liang Fafu wrote a post examining the nationalists’ demonization of Jin. Liang’s commentary is no longer available on his blog but has been re-posted by someone at 6571.net. Translated by CDT:

Look at the face of these nationalists. A few days ago, Jin Jing was a hero because of her courage in the face of attacks from [splittists], but today she becomes a traitor because her conscience led her to point out reality: a boycott of Carrefour will harm the Chinese people who work there. Even if she’s wrong, it’s her right to freely express what she thinks. Why curse her so crudely?

In my opinion, the harm done to her here is worse by far than the harm done her by the [splittists]. These nationalists are attacking her for her handicap, launching inhumane personal assaults on her.

In the eyes of the nationalists, Chinese workers losing their jobs—losing the money they need to support their families—is a matter of no consequence. For love of country, everybody should be willing to starve to death before going to work for a foreign company. This leaves me speechless.

To use such cutting rhetoric to attack a handicapped girl, to assault her on the basis of her handicap—－where has these nationalists’ humanity gone? As long as you love your country, it’s OK to dispense with humanity, dispense with basic respect for other people, dispense with basic respect for the dignity and spirit of a handicapped girl?

Speaking at the parade, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran was the most powerful nation in the world. The country's strength was such that no major power would dare to challenge its security, he said. Official media claimed the ceremony included the largest ever show of aerial strength, with a fly past by almost 200 aircraft. There was also a huge military parade, with missiles displayed on trucks.
