The mayor also said he hoped that football icon Diego Maradona would join the 80 athletes taking part in the 13-kilometre relay through the capital city's historic districts. The run would conclude with former world tennis star Gabriela Sabatini delivering the torch at the Club Hípico Argentino for a closing ceremony.
The relay is scheduled to begin at 2 pm (1700 GMT) Friday at the Costanera Sur amphitheater on the banks of La Plata River. Carlos Mauricio Espínola, triple medal winner in yachting, will begin the route by taking the torch on his boat through the dikes of Puerto Madero.
Alicia Morea, vice president of the Argentina Olympic Committee, said the organizers of the Beijing Games chose to include Buenos Aires in the torch route because "it is one of the most beautiful cities in the Americas." (dpa)
